The Giacobinid meteor stream observed by radar in 1998
نویسنده
چکیده
The return of the 1998 Giacobinid meteor shower associated with the comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner was observed by meteor radar at Ondřejov, Czech Republic. The duration of the intense part of the shower was approximately 3 hours. Though the limiting magnitude of the radar is +8 Mr, only overdense echoes down to +4.2 Mr were analyzed. A maximum number of 82 such shower meteors was recorded in the ten minute interval 13h 00m–13h 10m UT corresponding to solar longitude L = 194. ◦8200 ± 0. ◦0034 (J2000.0). The mass-distribution index s = 1.38 ± 0.04 indicates a lack of faint meteors in the most dense part of the stream.

Incoherent scatter radars (ISR) are versatile instruments for continuous monitoring of ionisation processes in the Earth's atmosphere. EISCAT, The European Incoherent Scatter facility has proven eective also in meteor studies. The time resolution of the radar can be reduced to a few milliseconds, sucient to resolve the passage of individual meteors through the narrow ISR beam. Methods for gro...
متن کاملLeonid meteor stream from Ondřejov radar observations in 1965 – 1967
Results of Ondřejov radar observations of Leonid meteor shower in 1965–1967 are presented. Observations performed during previous returns of Leonid meteor showers indicate that both in 1965 and 1966 the peak activity was observed at almost the same solar longitude near L = 235. ◦17. The activity pattern in 1965 showed two well pronounced peaks separated by 23 hours where the second one seemed t...

Arecibo radar imagery of Comet 8P/Tuttle reveals a 10-km-long nucleus with a highly bifurcated shape consistent with a contact binary. A separate echo component was also detected from large (>cm-size), slow-moving grains of the type expected to contribute to the Ursid meteor stream. ! 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Low-Perihelion Meteoroid Streams
The Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) has collected information on a number of weak meteor showers that have not been well characterized in the literature. A subsample of these showers (1) do not show a strong orbital resemblance to any known comets or asteroids, (2) have highly inclined orbits, (3) are at low perihelion distances ( 1 AU) and (4) are at small semimajor axes (\2 AU). Though one...
متن کاملRadiant measurement accuracy of micrometeors detected by the Arecibo 430 MHz Dual-Beam Radar
Precise knowledge of the angle between the meteor vector velocity and the radar beam axis is one of the largest source of errors in the Arecibo Observatory (AO) micrometeor observations. In this paper we study ∼250 high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) meteor head-echoes obtained using the dual-beam 430 MHz AO Radar in Puerto Rico, in order to reveal the distribution of this angle. All of these mete...
